But I will say this—I like Obama. I also like rap. However, I think the two joining forces could be a potentially toxic combination when it's all said and done. As we all know, the right has plenty of its nominal-but-effective hoopla with which to tarnish Obama's campaign. The last thing we need is O'Lie-ly fussing about the homie's close relationship with "dangerous rap empire Cash Money Records" or some such nonsense.
Maybe I'm overreacting. It's not that Obama's mention of Weezy was exactly complimentary, but seriously, when you're campaigning for the presidency, and you've got every popular music act—including every drug rap, sex rap, and gangsta rap figure on the planet—singing your praises and doing tribute songs, you need to watch your step (i.e., please don't willingly say "Lil' Wayne" into a microphone or brush dirt off your shoulder).
Obama doesn't need to go out of his way to attach himself to pop culture in order to resonate with potential young voters. He has the young vote, and that's not going to change.
On the other hand, I think the voters who are misled enough to be swayed by Obama's subtle outreaches to urban popular culture have already made up their minds. But this is more about giving the right fewer unprincipled opportunities to besmear the man's image. It's not so much about votes.
In any case, my plea to certain popular music entities out there is to STOP openly backing Obama between your freestyle sessions on satellite radio during which you brag about how big your guns are and how much weight you move. You know who you are—you need to understand that you're not helping.
