Pondering M.I.A.'s "Clothing Line"
Saturday, September 13, 2008 at 01:20PM
It seems like less of a clothing line and more of a glorified high-budget merch project. The available pieces feature the same ol' Kala imagery we've been seeing in some form or fashion since early '07. In fact, more than half the pieces feature either the letters "M.I.A.," Kala lyrics ("How many / How many") or the Kala cover emblem of Maya.
Furthermore, what's one to do if he/she wants to wear some of this new clothing line without A) looking like he/she wants to blatantly rip off M.I.A.'s own wardrobe or B) looking like he/she is a billboard for her retired music career. Seriously though. If Maya is truly done with music, what exactly is she advertising?
Also, it'd be kinda nice if Maya had included some toned-down selections without sacrificing aesthetic. Bright colors are church and all, but could we at least have one or two items for those of us who are slightly less boldly garbed?
Oh, and did I mention this stuff is unsexily expensive? Seventy five dollars for a T-shirt? Eat butt. Thanks but no thanks. That's not too refugee-like.
I've been a bit confused as to what this clothing name is actually called. Is it called Okley Run? Is it called Okley Leslie? Is it simply called M.I.A.? Can someone fill me in?
