National Film Board of Canada Opens Online Archive (Most Off-Topic Post Ever)

In the past year or so, I've become a budding animated film geek. My obsession has been mostly centered around animated shorts, and the NFB (National Film Board of Canada) has been my Mecca of sorts. There are few (if any) greater sources of bizarre animated ditties than NFB, so I'm giddy to announce that as of yesterday, their vaults have been opened to the public.

You can stream for free, and their archive is massive—hundreds upon hundreds of documentaries, shorts and feature lengths of all varieties. It's not their ENTIRE archive—mind you. There are several NFB staples missing from the archive, namely the 2007 Academy Award-nominated "Madame Tutli Putli." But even so, this is huge. I've been doing cartwheels for like two days straight.

I made a quick pass through the archive, and here are some animated gems that caught my eye. Visit the NFB site for higher-quality streams.

This is probably the most off-topic entry I've ever posted, but I couldn't resist. I've been talking noise to my friends about starting an animated shorts blog for months now, but that still hasn't come to fruition, so I had to use this as my platform. (I won't make a habit of it.)


Bonus tidbit: Boards of Canada got their name from NFB and much of their hazy nostalgic inspiration from old NFB documentaries.
