Crank Dat Bartman

bart-simpson-01.jpg

I found this slightly too ridiculous not to post. It's Diplo's mash of "Do the Bartman" with Kia Shine's "Krispy." The "Krispy" beat was done by two dudes from Dallas known as Play 'n Skillz. They appear to be white.

The Long Blondes – "Five Ways to End It (12" Erol Alkan Mix)"

The Sheffield-based Long Blondes get the remix treatment from London club night don Erol Alkan.

Stream

Alkan's venue Trash is now defunct after 10 years, but he's started a new club night called Durrr. He's kept very busy on the remix circuit in the 2000s so far. He's best known for his mash-up of "Blue Monday" with "Can't Get You Out of My Head" recorded under his guise Kurtis Rush. In typical mash-up culture fashion, Alkan named his blend "Can't Get Blue Monday Out of My Head." It caught on so much that Kylie actually performed it at the 2002 Brit Awards as seen below.

Frosty's Bollywood Blast!

bollywood-01.jpg

In late '06, Dublab crony Frosty spent some time record scouring in India. He happened upon a shop with an odd vinyl trove. His findings resulted in this 80-minute podcast originally posted in February. It's a good introduction to the genre for those unfamiliar. Not surprisingly, there's plenty Ashe Bhosle and R.D. Burman.

There is a track list up; you'll have to scroll down quite a bit to find it.

"With Every Heartbeat" Goes to #1 in the UK

robyn-08.jpg

Looks like your girl Robyn made it to #1 on the UK singles chart as reported by BBC. She beat out Timbaland, Kanye, Fergie and other non-Brits. The success of the single will undoubtedly fuel its critical acclaim, but this is a tricky situation for us snobs.

"With Every Heartbeat" was originally released last year as a Kleerup 7-inch on Risky Dazzle. Only 600 were pressed. So obviously the song/single didn't _impact_ until this year. What does it all mean? Well, it basically means that when you compile your favorite singles of 2007 list, "With Every Heartbeat" better not be on it. If it is, you are either A) misinformed, B) ignorant or C) a liar. It will render your entire list moot.

Why? Because it's a 2006 single. The 2007 release is simply a reissue. And you can't put a previous year's single on this year's chart. I won't allow it. I make these rules.

Anyway, have you seen the video? If not, poor you. (Actually, it has two videos, one for each release, the latter of which merits the "poor you.")

Question

Does anyone know how I can trick Google Reader into displaying its own special Googlefied audio player whenever I post an MP3? If so, you should holler.

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings – "100 Days, 100 Nights"

sharon-jones-01.jpg

There was a pleasant surprise in my inbox this morning. "100 Days, 100 Nights" is the "focus track" from the forthcoming album of the same name, which won't drop until October. Sharon's album Naturally easily took the cake for best soul record of '05. I would have been willing to blindly throw in all my chips that 100 Days would take that crown without argument again this year if it hadn't been for that pesky Nicole Willis and her thoroughly awesome new LP. It will be interesting to hear who will come out on top.

I'll be impatiently waiting for 100 Days. In the meantime, I can always enjoy some very orange press photos. Or I can hear the four tracks posted on her MySpace. Here's "100 Days" followed by some distant tour dates:

Oct. 06: The Apollo Theatre, NYC
Nov. 09: Middle East Underground, Cambridge
Nov. 11: La Tulipe, Montreal
Nov. 13: Lees Palace, Toronto
Nov. 14: Magic Stick, Detroit
Nov. 15: Park West, Chicago
Nov. 16: First Avenue, Minneapolis
Nov. 17: Turner Hall, Milwaukee

By the way, this is old news at this point, but apparently The Dap-Kings recorded on most of Amy's album and toured with her. I was unaware, but I can hardly think of a better outfit for the job.
