#5
Mathew Jonson - Agents of Time [Wagon Repair]
STREAM "GIRLS GOT RHYTHM"

Techno doesn't get a lot of love on this site, but props where props are due. Vancouver's Mathew Jonson recalls classic Detroit techno, acid house, early '90s ELM/IDM all while sonically acknowledging the UK bass-centric sound of the times on Agents of Time.

#4
Magnetic Man - S/T [Columbia]
WATCH "I NEED AIR" FT. ANGELA HUNTE

2010 has been a confusing time for dubstep, and somehow Magnetic Man makes the perfect centerpiece amongst the chaos. This all-star trio of Benga, Skream and Artwork has managed to pull the genre overground into melodic pop territories without compromising too many of its underground sensibilities. The album also takes a broad, even comprehensive look at the expansive genre and all its strains, all while sticking by a clean and glossy foundation.

#3
Jammer - Jahmanji [Big Dada]
WATCH "MAX NOT MINIMUM"

Grime's level of exposure in North America dropped exponentially after Lady Sov's '06 flop, but that didn't slow things down for it in the UK. Jammer has been at the forefront of the genre since its inception, and Jahmanji is a testament to his fluency thereof. What sets it apart from the average foray into grime is its adventurous nature and good balance of poppy tracks with more experimental ones. Jammer's sharp flows don't hurt either.

#2
Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty [Def Jam]
WATCH "SHUTTERBUG" FT. CUTTY

By the time "Hey Ya!" dropped, OutKast was already a veteran rap act, and that was seven long years ago. Since then, the duo has popped up here and there but has otherwise been practically dormant. So the highly anticipated and long- delayed Sir Lucious Left Foot has been the perfect rejuvinator of the OutKast legacy. It has done for OutKast what OB4CL2 did for the Wu brand last year. Sir Lucious' many producers remained unified in the vocoder-steeped ATLien funk of OutKast's past while offering enough new sounds to make it more than just an OutKast revivalist effort. And Big Boi's verses are on point as usual.

#1
Mount Kimbie - Crooks & Liars [Hotflush]
STREAM "BEFORE I MOVE ON"

The London duo of Dom Maker and Kai Campos have made what I'd argue is the best UK bass album since Burial's Untrue. Smart, scattered textures are the key ingredient to Crooks & Liars, which functions largely as a beat-teeming ambient record. Where Mount Kimbie get the upperhand over their peers in this fast-growing genre is by applying darkly blissful melodics to the cold textures we're so used to hearing in this scene. There are loads of listenable acts in UK bass, but Mount Kimbie upped the ante by recording a real album.
