Paul Wall [ft. Bun B & Kid Sister] - "Imma Get It" [prod. by Travis Barker]

Kid Sisterphoto by Mark-Edward Jenko
Paul Wall stays tethered to his Texan rap roots on his new LP, Heart of a Champion. Many of the guest spots are taken by Houston heavyweights (Slim Thug, Lil' Keke, Chamillionaire, Z-Ro, Devin the Dude), as well as some of-the-moment non-Texan southern talent (Yelawolf, Jay Electronica, Yo Gotti). All in all it's nothing out of the ordinary, except for an unusually gully verse by Fool's Gold first lady Kid Sister. No idea how this oddball collab came about, but it definitely works.

Nick Catchdubs at Fix on Wednesday

Fix is goin' hard again this week. Headlining will be Brooklyn-based DJ, producer, Fool's Gold co-founder, and all-around doer of big things Nick Catchdubs. He's arguably the biggest name to play Fix this summer, and that's saying a lot. Click to RSVP.

Alongside A-Trak (Kanye's tour DJ and 1997 DMC champion), Catchdubs founded Fool's Gold, the label that launched the careers of Kid Cudi and Kid Sister, in 2007. He's also done mixtapes for Wale, Mark Ronson and Mishka. Get tunage:

As far as the Fix gig goes, you know the deal. $1 wine for ladies and $5 domestic buckets. Support by resident DJs EQ and Shortfuze. Luckily, Fix is now 18-and-up on Wednesdays, so all you freshmen and high school seniors can come out and jerk and D-town boogie like us grown folks.

DJ Gant-Man - "Juke Dat Girl (Greenmoney Remix)"

DJ Gant-Man

Chicago juke had a real shot at becoming a household American fixture two years ago. Dude 'n Nem's "Watch My Feet" (which I still not-so-secretly bump regularly) had everything it needed to jumpstart the whole movement. But a disintegrating TVT Records management couldn't quite provide a solid marketing strategy. After a few weeks of legitimate buzz and a brief stint on BET, "Watch My Feet" was a mere hazy memory.

With the exception of Twista's '07 song "Pimp Like Me," Chicagoan mainstays like Kanye, Kells, Common, Lupe, Berg and Shawnna seem somewhat distant from and oblivious to juke, so it's not likely that any of them will be putting it on their backs any time soon. Even The Cool Kids keep the genre at an arm's length. So it's looking like the recently Fool's Gold-signed Gant-Man is the new potential savior of juke, and I'm sure he's fine with that because his pseudonyms include General Juke and Baby House. He clearly eats and breathes this stuff.

His new single "Juke Dat Girl" is a bare-bones-but-essential tribute to Blackman's cult 12-inch "Beat That Bitch With a Bat" from '93. UK producer Greenmoney strips most of the juke traces away from the track and fashions it into grimey bloghouse:
