Azealia Banks - "Fuck Up the Fun" prod. by Diplo

Azealia Banks with Cornell West | photo by Kate Perkins
AiMT has been a ghost town for two months, but the hiatus is ending now in a big way. The next post will be the debut of something BIG for this site, mainly because it will provide content on a regular basis in a format that will be a lot easier for me to stay on top of regularly and naturally.

While I'm putting the finishing touches on it, I thought I'd share some new heat by two of AiMT's all-time favs, Diplo and Azealia Banks. (By the way, if you didn't catch the video for Diplo's new single, "Express Yourself," please do so now.)

Here's a bonus, which I posted back in January, but the SOPA blackout kept us from getting our precious aggregated web love:

Cool Shoes Fayetteville tonight!

Cool Shoes Fayettevilleflyer design by Shawn Lee
It's Friday the 13th, and the amazingly on-point monthly Little Rock party Cool Shoes has come to Fayetteville! I've been pumping Cool Shoes here on AiMT for years now, so I'm very happy to help bring it to my home town. Tonight we've got Cool Shoes residents Wolf-E-Wolf and Cam Holifield along with myself and local DJ/promoter extraordinaire Beat Bachs. The Cool Shoes crew will be bringing down tons of extra sound, lights, and visuals. Hope to see you there.

Enjoy Wolf-E-Wolf's remix of Ronald Jenkees as a teaser for tonight:

earFear [ft. Jessica Lauren] - "Money"

Back in June, Little Rock's premier hip-hop duo earFear dropped Art Class, which AiMT has proudly sported as a streaming widget on the side bar. Around that same time of the album's release, earFear member and AiMT regular 607 sent me his marvelous flip of Diplo and Douster's "On!," which you can peep below. Upon receiving it, I tucked the MP3 away in some obscure folder and pitifully forgot about it. Meanwhile, earFear has managed to complete another full album, which is slated to drop on Halloween. It will be earFear's third album in the last 10 months.

What I want you to take away from this story is that it takes me longer to post an MP3 than it takes earFear to complete an entire album. So to celebrate earFear's beyond-diligent work ethic (and AiMT's non-existent time management skills), here is a long-overdue selection from their awesome (and still new) album, Art Class. You can cop the album for $10 over on their Bandcamp page.

Major Lazer [ft. Vybz Kartel] - "Pon de Floor (Wolf-E-Wolf Remix)"

Arkansas' reigning dubstep head honcho Wolf-E-Wolf doesn't drop tracks all too often, but when he does, it's usually quite an event. And this rework of the '09 Major Lazer classic is his most impressive offering to date.

Wolf has been owning the Central Arkansas party circuit lately. He's headlined just about every Cool Shoes and Sub Kulture in the past year—this is the case even when they've got big-name out-of-towners on the bill. This remix is a good indication that Wolf won't likely be slowing down anytime soon.

Tyler, the Creator [ft. 607] - "Yonkers (Remix)"

607photo by On tha Grind
I've been having conversations lately about how OFWGKTA could be the rap Nirvana. And that totally sounds like some corny Rolling Stone op-ed piece, but in other words, Odd Future could inspire a legion of imitators and completely reconfigure the hip-hop mainstream. If this happens, you can bet that 95% of mainstream rappers who have become popular since '96 or so would be out of a job. You can't just go 10 year rhyming earnestly about cars and money and then comfortably change lanes into OFWGKTA territories. It'd be a train wreck. This is evidenced by recent impossibly boring "Yonkers" freestyles by N.O.R.E., Styles P and Ace Hood.

607, on the other hand, has no trouble whatsoever jumping on "Yonkers" and completely murdering 16. This is the first flip/remix 607 has graced AiMT with in something like 15 months. This one's long overdue, and it's "Yonkers," so yeah, NSFW:

Lord Six is working on a new earFear album with Bobby, so hopefully we'll get another goody or two out of him before he's done recording. In the meantime, you can stream the entire "old" (December, 2010) earFear album on the right sidebar, or go watch the epic video for "Facebook Fraud" right now if you missed it.

Also catch 607 opening for Big K.R.I.T. in Little Rock on June 3.

Crizzly in Little Rock tonight at Sub Kulture

Just a quick heads up that San Antonio dubstep champ Crizzly is headlining tonight's Sub Kulture at Downtown Music Hall in Little Rock. Here's his take on L.A. Style's '92 techno classic "James Brown Is Dead":

earFear - "Facebook  Fraud"

Veteran Arkansas rapper and recurring AiMT favorite 607 has just dropped an album with his brother Bobby for the New Year. The duo goes by earFear these days. They put out a pair of albums back in the summer, and this new album, G33KS G0N3 W!LD, marks 607's—drum roll—35th album, complete with a Devin the Dude feature. Stream the whole thing over on the sidebar or over at earFear's BandCamp page.

If you read AiMT with much regularity, you probably already have the skinny on Lord Six, so I'll spare you the long bio. But dude's been crushing it in Little Rock for just about as long as my adult brain can remember, and this track may be his catchiest, most noteworthy one to date. Honest viral potential here:

EarFear - "You Don't Count"

607607 speaking at Harvard Law
2009 saw Little Rock rapper and AiMT BFF 607 unleash a small frenzy of flips and remixes on the web. (Download them all after the jump.) This little treasure trove kicked up quite a bit of blog buzz, getting him some shine on Mad Decent along with a chart-topping entry on Hype Machine. Luckily Lord Six tells me that he's wanting to get back on the remix grind, so hopefully we can expect some more eventually.

In his time off from recording remixes, Six hasn't exactly been slacking. He reunited with his brother Bobby (formerly known as Morbid) and recorded two full albums (both of which you can cop over at their Bandcamp page). Years back, they recorded and performed as Trauma Team, but these days they're calling themselves EarFear. Speaking on their two albums, Six describes one as "aggressive" (The Ignit Truth) and the other "calm" (Altar Call). Here's a cut off the former:

Sleek - Summer 2010 Mix

This summer has seen dubstep spread like poison ivy throughout the state. Central Arkansas has had a strong scene for some time now, but Fayetteville and NWA are beginning to creep into the picture in a big way. From the bass-heavy tents at festivals like Wakarusa, Soulstice, and this weekend's Pronoia to the launch of KXUA's weekly dubstep show, Midrange Optional, to huge nights at Fix with 12th Planet and local Aerosault DJ Domewrekka to countless emerging regional DJs and parties, it's actually getting tough to keep track of it all. (Keep an eye on the NWA Dubstep Facebook page to keep your finger on the pulse.)

Beyond that, West Memphis also has a blossoming scene (and I'll go ahead and assume that Tulsa and Southern Missouri do too, although my connects aren't very deep out there). So all in all, dubstep has become a huge force in the state and in the region at large. I'll be spotlighting some local stuff very soon, but until then, let's shift our focus back to the OGs down in Central Arkansas.

Little Rock-based Cool Shoes homie DJ Shawn Lee has been busy gigging and honing his production skills lately, but he made some time to lay down this solid summer mix showcasing the jarring, aggressive dubstep for which he's known. He even threw a couple of his original numbers into the pot. Catch Sleek alongside myself, Wolf-E-Wolf and Domewrekka on September 10 at Speakeasy. I'll be hitting you up with more info on that really soon.

Tracklist after the jump.
