Baby Armie - Always the Movement

Took me forever to find the OG Walmart font.
I've done some low-key one-offs here and there over the past year, but this is my first "proper" mix in OVER a year. My schizophrenia as a DJ isn't slowing down—since I launched AiMT, I've thrown down disco, electro, bmore, Bollywood, and who knows what else. This time around it's a full-on dubstep set. It's meant to be a companion piece to the new Dubstep Thursdays at Speakeasy.

This particular mix has more Baby Armie exclusives than any other I've put out. I'll be posting them individually in the coming weeks (and you can grab that G6 jernt after the jump for starters). It's also steeped with A-state friendliness: unreleased tracks by Wolf-E-Wolf and Sleek, an unreleased 607 flip as well as his killer Basement Jaxx one, and exclusive blends by yours truly, including one of Fayetteville rapper and Concrete Schoolyard co-host T.Jay's new track "Breakfast & Biggie." (Cop it off iTunes.) Oh! And most importantly, there are multiple Walmart references to round out the Arkansas vibes. Enjoy!

Terror Danjah - "I'm Feelin' U"

Terror Danjah

Terror Danjah has been a staple in the UK grime (and pre-grime) movement for about 10 years, and Undeniable, his proper debut, came out this week. Since he's typically worked with vocalists, he hasn't had much of a need for a solo album. But with his recent influx quality 12-inches on labels like Planet µ and Hyperdub, a true solo album finally makes sense, and it doesn't disappoint. It's a great midway point between all the angular urban sounds coming out of the UK right now (dubstep, garage, grime, funky).

Ciara vs. Guido [ft. Ludacris] - "Ride (Baby Armie A+B)"

Ciara vs. Guido

UPDATE: So I just discovered (upon Googling "ciara vs guido") that Giographic already blended these two songs back in May. Big time facepalm, but the two versions are different enough that I feel justified keeping this version up. His version seems to use the full version of "Ride," whereas mine just uses the acapella. I'm guessing a proper acapella version wasn't available when he made his back in May. Anyway, freakishly unlikely things happen sometimes. Moving forward.

Just a quick dubstep slow jam blend for that ass. Check out the instrumental source, Guido's "Mad Sax," off his new album Anidea (iTunes, $9.99).

Sleek - Summer 2010 Mix

This summer has seen dubstep spread like poison ivy throughout the state. Central Arkansas has had a strong scene for some time now, but Fayetteville and NWA are beginning to creep into the picture in a big way. From the bass-heavy tents at festivals like Wakarusa, Soulstice, and this weekend's Pronoia to the launch of KXUA's weekly dubstep show, Midrange Optional, to huge nights at Fix with 12th Planet and local Aerosault DJ Domewrekka to countless emerging regional DJs and parties, it's actually getting tough to keep track of it all. (Keep an eye on the NWA Dubstep Facebook page to keep your finger on the pulse.)

Beyond that, West Memphis also has a blossoming scene (and I'll go ahead and assume that Tulsa and Southern Missouri do too, although my connects aren't very deep out there). So all in all, dubstep has become a huge force in the state and in the region at large. I'll be spotlighting some local stuff very soon, but until then, let's shift our focus back to the OGs down in Central Arkansas.

Little Rock-based Cool Shoes homie DJ Shawn Lee has been busy gigging and honing his production skills lately, but he made some time to lay down this solid summer mix showcasing the jarring, aggressive dubstep for which he's known. He even threw a couple of his original numbers into the pot. Catch Sleek alongside myself, Wolf-E-Wolf and Domewrekka on September 10 at Speakeasy. I'll be hitting you up with more info on that really soon.

Skream [ft. La Roux] - "Finally"

La Roux

Feeling this not-quite-dubstep collab between Skream and Elly Jackson. Actually it's technically full-on dubstep, but it's much closer to the more subdued, cerebral strain popularized by Hyperdub than the wobble-rific thuds of Rusko or 12th Planet. (But make no mistake—Skream can wobble with the best of them.)

In any case, this is a grade-A collab. Elly turns out a stunning vocal performance. She's obviously come a long way in harnessing her voice since the La Roux sessions back in 2008. And Skream's track is perfectly bleak and apocalyptic. Maybe I'm jumping the gun, but I'll go ahead and say that this is the best collab of its nature since "Teardrop."

12th Planet at Fix on Wednesday

12th Planetphoto by Luke Nguyen
This will be Northwest Arkansas' undisputed biggest dubstep party yet, and lucky for us, we've got 12th Planet, who is arguably the biggest name in stateside dubstep, headlining the ticket.

This L.A.-based DJ/producer co-founded the SMOG label in 2006 and has been doing big things for the genre ever since. SMOG is largely responsible for West Coast dubstep's aggressive sound and put L.A. on the map as the genre's domestic capital. Lately 12th Planet has caught major buzz for his collaborations with veteran West Coast rapper Ras Kass.

This is the official Art Amiss 12 afterparty. It's tomorrow night (Wednesday) at Fix. Epiphany and Bizar will be opening along with Fix residents EQ and Shortfuze. Click to RSVP. If you miss this show, you are fully hopeless. That's the only explanation.

Holler at five 12th Planet choonz after the jump.
